Blind cat searches for a new home

A cat who had surgery to remove both eyes is now searching for her forever home.

A six-year old white and tortoiseshell cat called Betty has been with the RSPCA Sheffield Animal Centre since she was rescued by RSPCA inspectors in January (2019).

It was unclear to staff whether her eye issues were as a result of an untreated infection or trauma but as she had little sight left, vets decided to remove her eyes to prevent her suffering further.

Hayley Crookes, Cattery Team Leader at the RSPCA Sheffield Animal Centre, said: “It has not been an easy road for poor Betty. She had multiple infections and had to go on and off pain relief alongside the rehab work we were doing to help her learn how to maximise the use of her remaining senses now that she has no sight.

“She is a strong girl and all this trauma has never held Betty back. Throughout all of this, although she will have likely been sore and in pain, she has been nothing but a pleasure to care for since the day she arrived.

“She loves nothing more than spending time with her carers, her favourite place to be is on your shoulder giving you hugs and a good groom. She is extremely clean in her environment and due to her lack of sight, her other senses are amazing, especially when she is having a play or trying to get your attention – sometimes you would have no idea she was able to see.

“We always let her know we are there with gentle words and by blowing softly on her, so we don’t make her jump. Now she is happy and healthy and is looking for a perfect forever home with owners who will understand how to care for a blind animal.”

RSPCA staff advise that Betty will need an indoor home only with adults or families with other children. She will need her own room initially and then very slowly she can be introduced to the rest of the home, so she can map it out in her head and find her way around.

Extra care will be needed to make sure Betty’s environment is free of hazards but other than this, staff say Betty is a normal and lovely cat who enjoys fuss and cuddles. She could possibly live with another cat and a friendly, relaxed dog.

If you think you can offer Betty the forever home she needs and would like any more information, you can email [email protected].
