Missing cat takes 60-mile trip in delivery lorry

A cat who had been missing since Easter has now been reunited with his owner thanks to him being micro-chipped.

Dexter managed to climb into a supermarket delivery lorry and took a 60-mile round trip before hopping back out at the warehouse in Sheffield.

The driver of the Morrisons lorry had just taken a journey from Sheffield to Wakefield and back again, when staff at the Hillsborough store spotted the cat jumping out.

The staff contacted the RSPCA who collected the six-year-old Maine Coon, part domestic short hair tabby cat.

Inspector Kim Greaves who collected Dexter, said: “Dexter had certainly been on a journey. Thankfully, he knew when to get off and he didn’t jump out at Wakefield or somewhere else.

“I scanned the microchip and realised he was registered to Gaynor Radley in Sheffield, When I called her she was absolutely amazed he had been found, as he had been missing since Easter. This just stresses the importance of micro-chipping your pets.”

Figures show that between January and December 2017, out of the 5,647 cats who came into the 17 RSPCA national centres in England and Wales, 4,896 of these cats were not chipped.

This means that only 13% of cats were micro-chipped and many of these did not have up-to-date details recorded.

Inspector Greaves added: “Micro-chipping your pet is vitally important in ensuring that if anything happens to them, if they are lost or stolen, or hit by a car, then they can be returned to you. “
