Rescue dog steals the show at new owners wedding

Two years after finding herself at Dogs Trust Loughborough, a rescue dog has played a starring role in her new owners wedding.

Shar Pei Tina was being looked after at the rehoming centre in March 2017 after her family, who she had lived with since a puppy, took the heart-breaking decision to hand her over into the charity’s care, as they were moving abroad and couldn’t take her with them.

Luckily Tina, then two, didn’t have long to wait before finding her perfect match as Kerri Denton and Patrick Hughes visited the rehoming centre and fell in love with her.

Two years later, she made the happiest day of Kerri and Patrick’s life even happier by joining in their wedding as a flower girl when they tied the knot at Swancar Farm Country House in Trowell last month.

Kerri said: “When we started planning the wedding, we knew she had to have a role in the most important day of our lives so far! She made a grand entrance and of course all eyes were on her, but we didn’t mind at all.

“I didn’t even mind when she jumped up in excitement and put muddy paw prints all over my wedding dress. It wouldn’t have been quite the same if she hadn’t. We couldn’t imagine the day without her. She is family. She is our furry child.”

Kerry says Tina has bags of personality and likes to be on the go, so they have done lots of training with her to mentally as well as physically active, which all helped prepare her for the special occasion.

Kerri adds: “When we first adopted her she pulled on the lead a lot and wasn’t very good at listening so we have done lots of basic training with her and she’s brilliant now. She is quite independent, makes us laugh and loves a cuddle. What more could we ask for when it comes to having a canine companion?”

Celine Di Crocco, Dogs Trust Loughborough Manager, said: “We absolutely love finding out how our Dogs Trust dogs are getting on in their new families and it is fantastic that Tina had a starring role on Kerri and Patrick’s big day. Just like marriage, welcoming a dog into your life is a huge commitment and it is wonderful to see that Tina has definitely found her family for life.”
