Couple travel 400 miles to adopt dog from Battersea

A Scottish couple traveled over 400 miles to adopt a rescue dog from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s London centre.

Michelle and Brad George made the five-hour train journey from their homes in Inverkeithing, Scotland, to rehome a ten-month-old Battersea Mongrel, Mouse.

Mouse was taken to the centre last December as a stray and was severely underweight with deformed back legs.

Battersea’s expert veterinary team spent five months treating her and had to put a pin in one of her legs to help her walk. She also needed dental surgery and treatment for a hernia.

The lovable Mongrel has now fully recovered from her surgery and is enjoying her life with her new family.

This is not the first time that the couple from Scotland have traveled the long distance to adopt a Battersea dog. In January 2012, Michelle and Brad adopted Hugo, a four-month-old Staffie-cross.

Hugo sadly passed away in January of this year and Michelle said losing him was so hard they initially didn’t know if they would adopt a dog again.

Michelle said: “Deciding where to look for a new dog was an easy decision, Battersea is the only place we would go to now. We want to give these dogs a good upbringing and we have a lot of time to give – so why not chose a dog that needs us most?”

Battersea is appealing to the public to choose to rehome a rescue dog or cat as it reveals a growing number of people are turning their backs on homeless animals – and logging onto the Internet to find a new pet instead.

In 2017, Battersea helped over 7,000 dogs and cats and cares for an average of 300 dogs and 200 cats across its three centres at any one time.
