Dogs Trust Merseyside shine a light on misunderstood homeless hounds

Dogs Trust Merseyside is holding its first Greyhound & Lurcher Awareness week after more than ever being cared for at the rehoming centre.

Almost a quarter of the 81 homeless hounds currently at the rehoming centre in Huyton are Greyhounds and Lurchers.

The awareness week will start on Monday (23 April) and the team are hoping that by shining the spotlight on them they will soon be racing off to their forever homes.

Throughout the week visitors will be able to find out everything they need to know about Greyhounds and Lurchers, sharing facts and debunking myths about them.

Visitors will also be able to find out about some of the pooches waiting for their forever home, including eight year old, ex-race Buddy, who is the oldest of the bunch and two-year-old Jay.

Georgina Lowery, Dogs Trust Merseyside Manager, said: “We are determined to debunk the myths about gorgeous Greyhounds and lovely Lurchers. As Greyhounds are associated with racing, people assume they need lots of exercise, but that’s not necessarily the care.

“Greyhounds are even often known as couch potatoes, as after a good sprint they like nothing more than to cosy up on a comfy bed and snooze in a warm home, being quite lazy at heart.”
