Newborn kittens dumped in a plastic bag and left to die

The RSPCA is appealing for information after two newborn kittens were dumped in a plastic bag and left next to some bins in Leicester.

The make kittens, who were about three days old when found, still had their eyes closed and their umbilical cords attached.

They were discovered in a plastic bag next to a wheelie bin in Warwick Street, Leicester in Friday 9 August at about 5:30pm, by a kind member of the public who took the kittens inside and called the RSPCA.

Inspector Ann Bennett is now appealing for information on how the young kittens came to be abandoned.

She said: “These two very young kittens were callously dumped like rubbish and separated from their mum far too early. Sadly, we do see many animals abandoned like this. We understand that sometimes people’s circumstances change which means they can no longer care for their pets but there is never an excuse to abandon an animal.

“We see a peak in the number of animals abandoned over the summer months. Last summer (June, July and August) there were 23,673 abandoned animals reported to the RSPCA, which is an 85% increase from the winter months.”

The kittens are now being cared for by a fosterer at the RSPCA Northamptonshire branch until they are old enough to be rehomed. They have been named Max and Lewis and as they are so young, they are being hand-reared which means round-the-clock care.

If you have any information about how the kittens came to be abandoned, you should contact the inspectorate line on 0300 123 8018.
