PCSO to take on 130-mile bike challenge for Dogs Trust Shrewsbury

A Police Community Support Officer from Stoke-on-Trent is hoping to raise money for Dogs Trust Shrewsbury by taking on a two-day cycling challenge.

Dog lover Steve Sherratt, who has been a PCSO with Staffordshire Police for eleven years, is undertaking the mammoth 130-mile bike ride to raise hundreds of pounds for homeless dogs.

Steve who has two rescue dogs himself from Dogs Trust Shrewsbury last year cycled 115 miles from him home in Stoke to Dogs Trust Manchester and back down to Dogs Trust Shrewsbury.

However, this year he has set himself the task of cycling even further and taking in Dogs Trust Merseyside too.

Steve will start the challenge on Saturday 21 July from Stoke and cycle 40 miles to Dogs Trust Manchester in Tameside. After taking a break he will continue for another 40 miles to the Merseyside rehoming centre in Huyton. The following morning (22nd July) he will continue to Shropshire, finishing the challenge at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury.

Steve who is based at Cheadle Police Station in Staffordshire, said: “I have done lots of cycle rides for Dogs Trust and although its always daunting before I start, I know it helps dogs who often through no fault of their own have had to leave behind everything they’ve ever known, really spurs me on.

“My two boys are a daily reminder of how important its is to raise money so that thousands of dogs that fin themselves being cared for by Dogs Trust every year to get everything they need whilst they wait for their forever homes.”

The PCSO has been raising money for Dogs Trust for the last six years organising everything from auctions and raffles to sponsored walks and bike rides.

Louise Campbell, Dogs Trust Shrewsbury Manager, said: “I couldn’t believe it last year when Steve told us what he was doing, and this is even more incredible. On average it costs over £40 every day to care for one of our dogs and over the years Steve has raised more than £5,500 for us, which is amazing.”
