Pet charity reveals plans to replace Manchester Pet Hospital

Pet charity, PDSA has launched an appeal to replace their ‘outdated’ pet hospital in Manchester.

PDSA has unveiled plans for a new £2.4 million ground breaking Pet Wellbeing Centre in Manchester, which will replace the ‘outdated’ pet hospital in Old Trafford. After 40 years of treating sick and injured pets, the pet charity hospital has reached breaking point.

Vets and nurses at the hospital treat nearly 12,000 pets every year, providing around 78,000 treatments, ranging from emergency life-saving surgery to routine vaccinations, but are now struggling to cope with the number of pet patients who need help.

The new wellbeing centre will feature a bigger, brighter waiting area, with separate areas for cats and dogs, to help to reduce the stress a visit to the vet can cause. It will also include a diagnostic room, digital x-ray facilities and more car parking.

The charity is hoping that the new facility will enable greater engagement with schoolchildren and the local community to help contribute to them becoming responsible pet owners of the future.

PDSA vet, Fiona Buchan, said they hope that the new centre will become the heart of the Manchester pet community: “Our Pet Hospital is a vital lifeline for local owners struggling to provide vet care for their pets. As much as we love it, the building is too old. It’s been patched up over the years but now struggles to cope with the number of pet patients who need us.

“(The new centre) will enable us to provide the best treatment possible to pet patients, in state-of-the-art surroundings, long into the future.”

Celebrity support

Local celebrities are getting behind the appeal and offering their support for the new centre, including Hollyoaks actress Sarah Jayne Dunn.

“I’ve supported PDSA for many years – they are a charity very close to my heart. My Manchester roots make this all more important to me. The charity does a fantastic job treating thousands of sick and injured pets every year, and with our support, PDSA can be there for Manchester’s pets and their owners when they need us most.”

Building work looks set to get started by the end of 2018 and doors are expected to open to the pet owners of Manchester by summer 2019.
