Crowning The Canine King Charles

2023 will be the year we see a new king crowned and to celebrate this historic occasion, Vet’s Kitchen is looking for their very own royal poster boy (or girl!) in the form of the new monarch’s canine namesake – the King Charles Spaniel.

These energetic and affectionate little dogs were first bred back in the 16th century to warm royal laps in draughty castles and on chilly carriage rides.

They became a firm favourite of King Charles II (hence the name) who was never separated from his beloved dogs, even taking them into parliament with him! And of course, both the King and his dogs sported those famous curly locks!

Due to sharing their name with our new monarch, these beautiful dogs are expected to experience a surge in popularity as people take a newfound interest in the breed. And now, health-led pet food company Vet’s Kitchen is looking for one curly-haired King Charles Spaniel* to be the face of their newly launched Senior Club.

There are an estimated 3.8 million senior pet dogs over the age of 7 living in the UK, which in human years is around 65 depending on the breed. And as our canine companions are living for longer, it comes as no surprise that they are developing the same set of age-related issues we see in older humans. So Vet’s Kitchen have launched a special Senior Dog Club to help our beloved seniors to live their twilight years happy and healthy.

And they’re looking for a King Charles Spaniel of a certain age to be the Club’s Ambassador – to grace correspondence with their royal pawprint and fly the flag for their fellow seniors. If your royal pooch is around 7 years old or older, simply send in their photo to Vet’s Kitchen telling us why they should be the King or Queen of the Seniors and the winner will be crowned at their very own coronation in May.

The winning dog will take part in a photoshoot and can select their favourite print to hang in their royal quarters at home. To enter, send your pet’s details to [email protected] or message Vet’s Kitchen via Facebook or Instagram.

“Everyone loves the excitement of a new puppy – the energy, the clubs and classes and the cuddles,” says Laura Shears, Managing Director of Vet’s Kitchen. “Sadly, our older dogs don’t always get the same adoration – they can be a bit slower, sometimes a bit doddery but they always remain our faithful, loving companions! So who better to fly the flag for our seniors during the year of a historic coronation than the King Charles Spaniel?! We can’t wait to meet the nation’s senior spaniels and pick a winner!”

Sign your golden oldie up to the Senior Dog Club and they will receive a Senior Dog Pass, a bag of senior dog food, along with special senior discounts and promos and a quarterly newsletter with tips and advice on providing the best care for your retiree. When they reach special milestone birthdays, they will receive a card and some extra treats and discounts.
